Hello everyone! Today I would like to share my experience of my first ever trek with all of you guys.
20th July 2018:
Today me, Bibek (The captain), Ankush, Anil (matcha), Radha and Jitender (jeetu) with the help of GBL (get beyond limits) started our journey from Bangalore to Kudremukh. The group was of 21 including Jolly (GBL outdoor leader), and Arun (GBL outdoor leader). In the bus, we had a fun introductory session to introduce ourselves and get to know each other well 🙂
21st July 2018:
We reached kudremukh around 4.30 AM in the morning. Arun and Jolly was in the line to get us permission from the forest department to trek. The forest officer came around 6. Already some other groups reached before us, because of that we couldn’t get permission for that day 🙁 as forest department only allows only 50 people per day. Later after sometime around 6.45 we all left to home-stay. The place was so beautiful and calm. The people who lived there was so amazing, due to heavy rains, school was off on that day. so kids were coming back home with big smile 🙂
We all got freshen up and had our breakfast, meanwhile a guy from forest department came to us and said we got the permission. We all were so happy, Arun was so excited that he dint even wear shoes and just ran with his chappal to the forest office to know more details, we all packed our lunch and power pack and followed him to the forest office. The view from the office was beautiful as it was on high altitude. Everyone were busy taking selfies and group pictures. We also took few pictures of ourselves.
And then Jolly comes and says, that today we did not get any permission., 🙁 We all felt very bad, but Jolly and Arun said they will make sure that we gonna trek on next day and asked us to not worry at all. We then headed to trek Bavikonda from the forest office around 9.45 AM., Arun continued this with his chappal only 😀 On the way Anil (matcha) got bitten by leech. This was the first time ever i saw a leech, i was so scared to touch it. Bibek (Captain) and Ankush did so much research on leeches before we started and they found few methods to remove the leech. But Jolly came to matcha and peacefully removed the leech by his finger nail. He also said NEVER EVER PUT SALT ON A LEECH as it contains more water in its body, when u apply salt it might die immediately and the sting with which it has bitten you would still be on your skin, which would cause infection. After that I removed more than 20 leeches as soon as I caught them on me or on my friends.
To reach the peak of bavikonda we had to climb up 4 kms. On the way, we were taking some time and enjoying the beauty on our four sides. It was looking beautiful. We were climbing up peacefully by taking pictures, talking and having fun. Bibek (Captain) was leading all of us on how to walk, how to put our steps so that we don’t loose our balance and fall down. But still I was on lead in falling down, by the time we reached the peak my falling count was 5. On the way Anil (matcha) was entertaining all of us by making weird sounds and dancing 😀 Mean while Radha took so many pictures of all us.
We reached the peak around 11.30 AM, we thought of spending some time their and having lunch but it started raining heavily so we decided to climb down. On the way to home stay we all spent some time at a water stream.
After reaching we changed our clothes, had lunch and started chilling. The weather was so good, and Jolly started singing with his ukulele. After, Varsha and Raksha also sang. It was so peaceful. Meanwhile Bibek and Ankush were busy photographing. 😀 After a while Arun arranged maggie for all of us.
After that we went to a near by water fall. After coming back, we all played MAFIA. After 3 rounds (including a demo), Radha suggested all of us a new game PING PONG, in which Apoorva got M,O,N of MONKEY 😀 we couldn’t finish the game as we had to do our dinner and we all slept after that.
22nd July 2018:
We woke up around 6.30 AM and we all got ready by 8.00 AM and headed to forest office as we got permission to trek KUDREMUKH. Yayyyy!
We had to handover all the plastic at office (as its strictly not allowed to carry any plastic) We filled our bottles with chocolates and biscuits and started our trek around 8.25 AM. As soon as we entered, we had to climb up a small cliff. After that we had to pass by a plain wet land which was full of green algae. As soon as I entered, I successfully opened my count of falling down for the day, it was so slippery I couldn’t help myself from falling down. Bibek and shavin helped me getting up and we continued. Immediately after that we passed by a beautiful stream, the depth of it was up to my knee and after we entered the forest. It was so beautiful, everyone of us were really happy and mesmerized to see the beauty of the forest. Most importantly Ankush wanted to trek in such place since a very long time, he was very happy and excited. The density of the forest was getting low as we were passing by, Bibek told that where ever there is a stream, the forest will be more dense than the other places. We all had to go fast as we need to cover 11 KM to reach the peak by 1.00 PM. In the walk of 3 KMs, I had fallen down 4 times 😐 Jolly says we should not feel bad while falling down, because this will help us learning more on how to trek. 😀 On the way, Arun plucked few guava and we all had them. As we reached the first mark, we took few group photos and continued our trek.
Now we had to climb up a cliff which was around 500 mts, it was steep so it took us 20 minutes to pass by. We passed another stream, after that path was little narrow filled with branches of the trees and the forest was dense. Due to rain, the path was little slippery. And then we reached 5 KM point, the view from there was so beautiful, we stopped there for 5-10 minutes, clicked pictures, had some snacks and continued.
Due to rains the path from here was filled with water which made little difficult for me to climb up. We were filling our water bottles from the stream as it was really important to be hydrated to continue. After some time we again had to climb up a small cliff. After here, there is a rock (which is a mark), we get phone signal here. We rested for sometime, called our family and then continued.
From here again we had to climb up a cliff which was challenging. It became difficult for me to climb up as I was tired a bit, as soon as we got on the top, we had to climb up another cliff, by this time my legs were paining so much and I was tired and thought of giving up. But my friend Bibek was constantly motivating me to not give up. After the cliff, the path was plain, and was comfortable to walk so we speeded up. We reached the final stream before the kudremukh peak. From here it was 15 min walk but it was a steep again. And the wind was blowing, it was raining, but we thought of climbing up no matter of what. We reached the peak. As soon as I reached the peak, I got tears in my eyes and I couldn’t believe that I climbed all the way up here., I was so proud of my self and was so happy. But it was raining heavily and jaw dropping cold. The time was already 1.10 PM. So, we took a group picture and we started climbing down and had lunch near the stream.
Amazing thing was 3 of the home stay dogs climbed all the way with one of the groups to the peak. It was so cold that one of the dog was shivering. Jolly covered the dog with his rain coat and it calmed down. And after lunch we headed down. We had to retrek all 11 KMs no matter what to reach our home stay. My knee started paining very badly which made difficult to walk all the way down. But some how with the help of my friends Bibek, Ankush and Anil we made it to the end by 5.56 PM. After reaching home stay we had some snacks, got freshened up quickly and went to bus stop by jeep.
In the two day trip, i did not got bitten by any of the leeches. Bibek count was 2. Ankush count was 3. Anil matcha’s count was 2. Radha count was 1. Jeetu count was 0 (even he dint got bitten up). There were two apoorva’s in the group, (we named as apoorva and appu) Apoorva got bitten up by so many leeches, it is difficult to say the count and appu was not attacked by any of the leeches though she wanted to be (dettol spray is the new secret :P). Once I was removing a leech from sharvi, the leech rolled on my finger, i felt so creepy >.< I threw it away however.
The two day trip was so good filled with lots of memories. And I think this was the best way to start my trekking. 😀
And finally I would like to thank Arun and Jolly for making this trip so much fun 🙂
